Many are calling for a rules update in the aftermath of Chase Utley’s slide into Ruben Tejada. After all, MLB added the Posey Rule when Posey’s leg was broken in a regular season game. Here is my proposal:
If a baserunner slides and makes contact with a fielder making a play on the ball, then the baserunner must end the slide in contact with the base. If the baserunner does not end the slide in contact with the base, then the baserunner is guilty of interference.
This proposal creates no additional judgement calls for the umpires. The only additional factor is a [reviewable] issue of fact - “Is the baserunner in contact with the bag at the end of the slide.”
