Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

We are planning our kitchen remodel and my head is still spinning. We have selected our cabinet style, color and pulls. We are going with a pressed tin back splash rather than tile. And we have settled on granite rather than quartz for our counter tops.

We had always planned on a new refrigerator and dishwasher. But now that we’re planning on the pressed tin back splash, we’re thinking about replacing our white range with a stainless range. So I stopped by the local Home Depot to check out their selection.

Doh! New decisions to make: cabinet depth or standard depth refrigerator; slide in or free standing range. I’m almost ready to pay someone to make decisions for me.

Missed it by that much

The Av’s fall 4-2 to the Predators and will miss the playoffs for the first year since 1994. They went 14-2-2 over the last 18 games, earning 30 of a possible 36 points. But they started their run just a few games too late.

Oh well, wait until next year.

Go Oilers

It’s that time of year.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The Av’s have gone 14-1-2 since 27 February and stand at the brink of the playoffs. But the Av’s do not control their own destiny. They are 3 points back of the Flames with 2 games to play and they need an Oilers win over the Flames to have any chance. That makes me a huge Oilers fan for the next 10 hours or so.

Product Manager

SourceGear is looking for a Product Manager. Eric suggests that an experienced developer might be interested if:

You love to develop software, but you want to consider a broader range of opportunities. Maybe you’re looking up the corporate ladder and noticing that all the rungs above you require some business savvy. Maybe you want to be an entrepreneur.

Since my geographic handicap (CT not IL) takes me out of the running, let me add my 2 cents.

You love writing software because it is one of the ultimate expressions of creativity. You start with an idea, you shape it into a usable form and you bring it to life. You’ve been working your way up to higher levels of abstraction for most of your career. Each step up the abstraction tree increased your leverage and let you create something bigger.

Product Manager is the next step. Your vision will determine what problems your product will address and how users should address them. You’ll miss writing code and you’ll be frustrated with the fickle variability of the market. But you will forget all that as your vision to life with each release.

TiddlyWiki

I have been playing around with wikis at work, trying to improve my management of all the incidental information that flies around email. Unfortunately, most wikis that I’ve tried out are a bit much for a personal information store.

Until now. I just started working with TiddlyWiki, an open source micro-content wiki. TiddlyWiki is a self contained HTML file that runs a javascript wiki in the browser.

So Long Jake

Conventional Wisdom says that Jake Plummer’s great failing was not being John Elway. I’m sure that there is a lot of truth to that. But Jake didn’t make his life any easier with 3 playoff blowouts:

2003: Colts 41 - Broncos 10
2004: Colts 49 - Broncos 24
2005: Steelers 34 - Broncos 17

The writing was on the wall after the Mastermind gave the reins to rookie Jay Cutler for the last five games of last season. So long Jake and good luck with your next team.

Networked TiVo

I finally networked our Tivo last week, after two and half years. My first excuse was that I didn’t want to run cable up to the Tivo. My second excuse was that Tivo didn’t support WPA on wireless. Then I found the Tivo AG0100 , and I ran out of excuses.

The hardest part of the installation was typing in my WPA password. Once that was over, it was clear sailing.
