Java Tutorial Woes

You need to walk before you can run. My Java Tutorials may be linked from the DMOZ beginner’s level tutorial page, but I’d argue that Hibernate is an intermediate topic. So if you take my simple Hibernate application, change the database from the HSQLDB to HSQL and see the error message:

1
2
3
4
5
[java] net.sf.hibernate.HibernateException:
[java] JDBC Driver class not found: org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver
[java] at net.sf.hibernate. ...
[java] ...
[java] at Main.main(Unknown Source)

Then I really expect you to ask “Why is it looking for the HSQLDB JDBC driver (org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver) when I’m using HSQL?” on your own.

Changing of the Guard

The last nine Stanley Cups have been won by four teams: the Red Wings (3), Devils (3), Avalanche (2), and Stars (1). Over the past 10 years, those four teams have started the NHL season on the short list of Stanley Cup contenders. And now all four are out of the playoffs before the Conference Finals. With the collective bargaining agreement expiring, a lockout/walkout looming and time moving on; this was probably their last harrah. We have likely seen the last NHL games of Stevens, Forsberg, Yzerman, and Shanahan. I’m sure that all of them would have liked to ended hoisting the Cup over their heads. Now all of them will be watching someone else on TV.

CSI: Connecticut, Case Update

The Cat Scene Investigation continues. We are currently investigating cat physiology - Mark has red blood cells in his urine. Three samples (two by needle and once via a bunch of inert plastic pellets in his litter box) have all tested positive for blood and the X-ray doesn’t show any signs of a stone. We’ve picked up a medication from Mark’s doctor and called in another to VetCentric, a new veterinary pharmacy. Looks like Pee Patrol will continue for the next few weeks.

When all you have are lemons, make lemonade

Kudos to Rogers Cadenhead for his efforts towards improving Movable Type’s RSS 2.0 feed. It may seem a waste of time since all current aggregators support the existing template, but we all learn by example. And it’s never wasted time to insure that the most prominent examples are the best examples.

As much as I’d like to stuff Atom back into the bottle, I think the genie is out for good. It’s more productive to improve exising applications and build new ones than to throw brickbats at each other.

Corporate Blogging?

Scoble et al. are thinking about Corporate Blogging Best Practices. This may seem like splitting hairs, but I’d start by changing the name. There are plenty of channels for the corporate voice, I don’t think that weblogs should be one of them. I value weblogs for their personal viewpoint. I think that Employee Blog maintains that connotation while Corporate Blog loses it.

I would also suggest that all weblogs have an strong industry focus. James Robertson’s Smalltalk Tidbits, Industry Rants is a great site for Cincom Smalltalk. But it’s core focus is Smalltalk, not Cincom. For example, the appropriate industry focus for writing about .NET might be application development; or the industry focus for writing about Word might be office suites. I think that the act of defining the focus establishes both a useful corporate boundary and a meaningful scope.

The industry focus is especially important for executives. There are too many obstacles to plain talk about their own companies. Obstacles that are more easily navigated when talking about the industry. The Blog Maverick is popular CEO blog. And at it’s core, I’d say that it’s much more about the NBA than it is about the Mavericks.

You Gotta Believe

With a second overtime goal by Joe Sakic, the Av’s are right back in this thing. The Av’s sunk pretty low while falling behind 3-0. Now they’re flying high with 2 OT wins under their belt. I wonder if I can get to the Pepsi Center for game 6?

Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the game. The Red Wings-Flames were televised here in Connecticut. That’s a great series as well, so I don’t begrudge them their choice in regulation. But going to regularly scheduled programming instead of overtime? ABC is making a statement, and it’s not good for the NHL.

Bye Bye Rightbox

My email forwarding address at pobox.com (a.k.a. rightbox.com) will be going away soon. Anyone using my rightbox.com email addresses needs new contact information. I have no complaints about the Pobox service, but it has become redundant due to overlap with the email capabilities provided by FastMail (my IMAP mail provider) and Page-Zone (my web hosting provider).

Headless Mac

Dennis Sellers thinks it’s time for a headless Mac. Conventional wisdom says that the cost savings from removing the monitor from the iMac/eMac will lower the barrier to entry and increase market share. Color me sceptical, I think that most entry level buyers would add a new monitor to their purchase making it a wash.

I think the right market is the mid-market. I’d love to see the Mac version of the small form factor Shuttle PC. Something that fits between the iMac and the Power Mac. Small enough that it doesn’t take over the workspace. Easy to open up for a memory, hard disk, or graphics card upgrade. Leveraging an existing investment in a quality monitor. Potential for a third party CPU upgrade.

A machine like that might just find a place on professionals’ desks - along side Windows and Linux. They’re the influencers, the ones who recommend systems to other people.

Av's Extend Series

Av’s finally score a goal to beat the Sharks 1-0 in overtime. Nabokov had the force fields up, but Aebischer matched him save for save. I’ll pay for it later today, but this was too big a game to watch on tape delay.
